France, XIXe siècle. Augustin Mouchot, professeur de mathématiques à Alençon, invente une machine qui fonctionne à l'énergie solaire. Il la baptise Octave et la présente à Napoléon III. Sa machine rencontre un vif succès à l'Exposition universelle de 1878 mais le charbon est moins coûteux. Trahi par un collaborateur qui lui vole son brevet, Mouchot finit sa vie dans la misère.
